Claypits are work buildings under the "mines" sub-category, that allow the extraction of clay from clay deposits. The importance of collecting clay is to make pottery. Like most other buildings, the claypit needs employees to function. Claypits must be built over tiles containing clay deposits and tiles without said deposits.
Like other mines, building the claypit itself costs no resources, only adding the required components - storage and the optional auxiliary - costs resources.
The process of citizens mining the clay is very slow, but making larger mines (while covering more deposits) and hiring more employees to mine can help combat this. If there's no clay deposits near your settlement, this building has no purpose, and trading may be the player's only method of obtaining ore.
Claypits generate a lot of noise, so it's best to build them far away from public places if possible. Claypits, and any other mine, can have their mining speeds increased with upgrades purchased with knowledge points.
