Walls and fences

Walls and fences (which are also known as fortifications, depending on how they're built), are infrastructure constructs that act as impassable barriers that provide boundaries as well as prevent enemies from getting through, while fences guide citizens to where they are supposed to walk as well as keep animals from wandering away. By default, with the 'auto-build walls' option enabled for a building before constructing it, the choices of wall materials are wood, stone, and grand. The better the material, the slower it degrades, meaning that janitors don't need to maintain the building as much. The material grade also determines how long it takes for enemies to destroy them.

Stairs can also be built adjacent to fortifications, allowing citizens to get on top of them. Catapults can also be built to ward off attackers, assuming it is built facing the right direction. Catapults will fire on enemies that are in 90° of any area in front of and in range of the catapult; it can be manned by up to 6 people maximum.

There are also three types of independent walls the player can build without the need for a prerequisite building. These three types of are as follows: palisade, stone and grand. And there are three types of fences: stockade, stone fence and wood fence. During an attack from enemies, they will attempt to destroy any wall or fence impeding their way.

Walls can be created in two ways: the first is simply enabling the 'auto-build walls' option for a building during construction; the second method is leaving said option off, so only the building's interior is made, then adding the three aforementioned walls around the building's interior. This allows the player more flexibility in customizing building designs. In the second method, multiple wall types can even be placed against each other, further allowing more customization and possibilities in the player's design choices.

The boundaries of pastures will have a wooden fence by default, keeping the livestock inside. Walls added to a building will increase its isolation, which measures how secure and well-enclosed a building is, as well as preventing disruptive noise from being heard inside.
