Wood is a common resource in Songs of Syx. Wood can be cut from trees scattered around the world, or cheaply gained by trading, making it one of the easiest resources to find in the game. This is coupled with the fact that trees automatically grow near settlements in the world, even in areas where they were cut down. Due to the importance of wood in the game, it is highly recommended placing a settlement near a wooded area.
Wood (next to stone and cut stone) is used in nearly every type of building. It's also the cheapest and most basic type of material to be used for building, due to not only how easy it is to obtain wood, but that it degrades the easiest of any other building material, meaning that janitors must maintain wooden structures the most often.
There are three methods in obtaining wood. The first and quickest way is to use the Fell Tree or Remove all Resources commands, then dragging a selection box around a wooded area, which will have all available citizens cut all selected trees for wood, instantly removing said trees in the process. The bigger the trees, the more wood each one will provide. The second way of obtaining wood is building a woodcutter outpost, which requires employees to manage. The woodcutter provides a constant supply of wood, but at a slower but continuous rate that doesn't immediately remove the trees. The third way of obtaining wood is to simply trade for it, which is relatively simple, given wood's low cost.
With the use of carpenter buildings, wood is also used to make furniture, another very important resource in building. Note that every unit of furniture requires double that amount of wood, so wood storage should be managed carefully, otherwise carpenters can chew up your wood amounts. Deactivating carpenters when you don't need them is a good solution.
