Stone Mines are work buildings under the "mines" sub-category that allow the extraction of stone from stone deposits. The importance of collecting stone is to provide a common resource for building. Like most other buildings, the mine needs employees to function. Stone mines must be built over tiles containing stone deposits and tiles without said deposits.
Building the mine itself costs no resources, only adding the required storage and optional auxiliary components do.
The process of citizens mining the ore is very slow, but making larger mines (while covering more deposits) and hiring more employees to mine can help combat this. If there's no stone deposits near your settlement, this building has no purpose, and trading may be the player's only method of obtaining stone, as well as finding rocks in the ground with the use of the Clear Rock command.
Stone mines generate a lot of noise, so it's best to build them far away from public places if possible. Stone mines, and any other mine, can have their mining speeds increased with upgrades purchased with knowledge points.
"This room must be partially placed on stone deposits in order to function"
A stone deposit is different from rocks found on the ground. To identify, see the 'rocks vs. stone' image below. Green arrows point to stone deposits, while red arrows point to rocks. Rocks are gathered using the 'Clear Rocks' command, while stone deposits are mined with a tone mine. You can also hold down the right mouse button and move it over either types of stone to see their descriptions.
In-game description
"Mines extract minerals from the ground. Its efficiency is determined by the density of the minerals along with the auxiliary items you place."
