Retired peoples will not contribute to the economy, but having the oportunity to retire at old age will make your subjects happier to dedicate their lives to the service of the nation.

Resthome are one of the buildings in the game that are not necessary to construct, but later on can be a useful addition to ensure the happiness of your populace.
