Gem Mines are an unlockable work building under the "mines" sub-category that allow the extraction of gems from gem deposits. Like most other buildings, the mine needs employees to function. Gem mines must be built over tiles containing gem deposits and tiles without said deposits. This mine must be unlocked by spending 600 knowledge points, and costs 1800 points in total when counting the previous unlocks leading to the unlocking of the mine itself.
Building the mine itself costs no resources, only adding the required storage and optional auxiliary components do.
The process of citizens mining the gems is slow, but making larger mines (while covering more deposits) and hiring more employees to mine can help combat this. If there's no gem deposits near your settlement, this building has no purpose, and trading may be the player's only method of obtaining gems.
The importance of gem mines extends to gems being used for the most expensive of buildings and making jewelry.
Gem mines general a lot of noise, so it's best to build them far away from public places if possible. Gem mines, and any other mine, can have their mining speeds increased with upgrades purchased with knowledge points.
In-game description
"Mines extract minerals from the ground. Its efficiency is determined by the density of the minerals along with the auxiliary items you place."
