Law
The Law is a collection of game mechanics that encompass dealing with wicked citizens, as well as making them slaves. The mathematical formula for how the game handles law is as follows:
As time goes by, you'll discover that citizens will be murdered. If the culprit is not punished, your settlement will not be happy about it. When starting a new game, there's little the player can do about crimes, because the court building will not be available. Once it is available, a judge will decide if the crime committing citizen will be put to death, become a slave or simply be locked away for a while. Roughly all races in the game have a preference for justice being properly practiced, though some races will care more for it than others.
There are five buildings in the law sub-category (which is contained with the infrastructure category): the guardpost, dungeon, scaffolds, slaver and court. Guardposts will help discourage any wrongdoings within its vicinity, as any guards there will patrol the area near their posts and go after anyone breaking a law. Dungeons are where caught criminals are placed, and jailors must be hired to feed the prisoners and clean the latrines. Scaffolds are where the worst of criminals are put to death in public, setting a grim example for others to not commit crimes themselves. Slavers are where some criminals are converted from standard citizens to slaves. Courts, as previously mentioned, are where judges determine a suitable punishment for perpetrators.
The GUI for the law can be opened from the top of the screen. There, the percentage of what race of criminals that will be sent to the gallows and/or forced into slavery can be customized. The amount of citizens sent to the gallows should be managed carefully, as sending too many to be hanged can negatively impact happiness.
Arenas can be built to force prisoners to fight for redemption, as well as the enjoyment of any spectating citizens. The player is able to control the percentage of how many citizens of each race will be executed or turned into slaves.
In-game description
"As your city grows, some subjects will choose to pursue a criminal career. Crimes must be dealt with through law facilities. The effectiveness of your facilities make up your law value, which in turn deters crime."
