Entelodonts in the wild.

Animals are living beings that can be used for food and resources in Songs of Syx. The most common resource among all animals is meat. Animals can be found naturally among the environment. There are two main ways to get resources from animals: building a hunter outpost and having citizens constantly sneak up on them and attempt to kill them, which can sometimes fail, causing the citizen to return to the building and try again. The second way is to build a pasture, which citizens will capture the specific animal for the pen and breed as many as they can.

There are seven animals in the game, and will appear near within some distance of a settlement depending on the climate: Auroch, Dinoris, Entelodont, Globdien, Onx, Smilodon and Stagbeast. All of these animals are fictional, but are still based on real-world animals. Animals can breed naturally out in the open, which is done in the form of similar animals just bumping into each other by chance.

Animals can also be stored in boxes, which is the form of a resource known as livestock. These are animals small enough to be traded and be added to your pastures at any time.

Resources

As mentioned before, each animal is semi-unique in what they offer in resources, but all offer meat. Some more than others.

Descriptions

Auroch

In-game description

"Aurochs are giant beasts, found in the north with a ferocious temperament."

Dinoris

In-game description

"This majestic bird, though flightless, has often inspired works of art and the odd song or two. Occasionally hunted for its prized meat, this herbivore is also prized for its deocrative feathers, used to adorn tiaras, crowns, helmets and various head wear. Some Dinorises are also rumored to lay eggs of solid gold, but this has never been proven."

Entelodont

In-game description

"A ferocious four-legged mammal, an Entelodont can both feed a family for several days, as well as inspire fear in the hearts of hunters. Their thick hides can blunt the impact of any hunting weapon if not used with enough strength. While its ferocity and fearlessness often lead the hunters of these creatures to at least lose their pride, and at worst, their lives.

Globdien

In-game description

"The docile Globdien have long since been domesticated by Dondorians and Dondorian settlers regularly take over a dozen eggs of dozen eggs of said reptiles with them. These herbivores are generally harmless to the average hunter in the wild, albeit their jaws can snap bone with ease. Their eggs are harvested and collected for purposes of reproduction and the occasional omelette.

Onx

In-game description

"An onx is a stubborn beast, best left to its grazing. Though generally peaceful, it can wreak havoc if provoked, with its sharp horns and compact frame. It thrives in mountainous areas. Its favourite food is the Grieving Lilly, only found on southern ridges in dry and northern climates."

Smilodon

In-game description

"A deadly, fast, killing machine, this huge omnivore can run down any other known grounded animal. If often stays away from humanoids, but does not shy away from a fight. Few live to tell such a tale."

Stagbeast

In-game description

"A mighty antlered beast, this animal thrives on luscious planes. They are prized possessions by hunters as trophies, as securing such a trophy means having faced off against a herd of these mighty beasts that run down whole groups of hunters, while their sharp antlers can pierce any known armour."

Trivia

  • Despite the mentioning of Dinoris' laying golden eggs, this never occurs in-game.
