Modding or mods, which are shortened words for the term modification, is altering the nature of a game's mechanics in some way. Mods are generally made by players and/or fans of a game to enhance and/or change the nature of a game. Though it is not uncommon for the developers of a game to make mods as well. Mods can range from simply adding a new mechanic to the game, to being a complete conversion of a game. Some mods may even fix game-breaking bugs that have not yet been addressed by the game's developers.

An inverse term for a modified game is the word vanilla, which refers to a completely unmodified game. Some mods may be so helpful or so popular that some games may be considered lower in quality or outright unplayable without them.
